A Linux-based operating system developed by a French computer science student

When it comes to wearable devices, users should have full control over their machines and data. That is the vision of Florent Revest, the French computer science student who led the development of AsteroidOS, an open wearable platform that aims to give users more control over their privacy and hardware.

Revest has been working on the project for the past two years and has just announced the availability of the first alpha release of AsteroidOS for four different devices: LG G Watch, LG G Watch Urbane, Asus ZenWatch 2, and Sony Smartwatch 3.

The new operating system is using Qt 5.6 and QML for app development. It uses OpenEmbedded for providing a full GNU/Linux distribution and libhybris for porting to most Android and Android Wear watches.

Since its creation in 2015, AsteroidOS has been led by Revest, but the project is still in active development and is open towards external contribution and collaboration.
